Talking Points: The Road Ahead For Hillary Clinton

0
0

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — One of the big questions at this week’s Democratic convention is whether Hillary Clinton will be able to harness the support and enthusiasm of Bernie Sanders supporters.

It’s a question especially relevant for the Minnesota delegation, where a majority of delegates are pledged to Sanders.

Currently, polls show that more than 60 percent of voters — and even as many as 30 percent of Democrats — find Clinton untrustworthy.

The Clinton campaign is hoping that naming Sen. Tim Kaine as her running mate will fire up the Democratic base.

Ellen Goldberg Luger, a Minnesota delegate who has known Clinton for more than 20 years, hopes the convention will showcase the former Secretary of State’s personal side.

“She is such a warm, funny, engaging person, and I think she is beginning to come across that way to voters and the general public,” said Goldberg Luger, who was a guest on WCCO Sunday Morning.

Sanders is speaking at the convention on Monday. This won’t be a Ted Cruz moment, as Sanders has already endorsed Clinton.

However, more than a few Clinton backers have called that endorsement lukewarm.

Now leaked emails suggest that top Democratic officials worked for months to try and stall the Sanders campaign, which is why Sanders’ speech will get almost as much scrutiny as Clinton’s on Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in St. Paul say a two people suffered serious injuries early Sunday morning after a suspected drunk driver slammed into their car before crashing at an intersection.

A spokesperson for St. Paul police says the crash happened around 7 a.m. near Snelling and University avenues.

A suspected drunk driver hit a car carrying four people, two of which suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver then continued down Snelling for a few blocks before crashing near the St. Anthony Avenue intersection.

The driver was arrested, but police say the individual refused to take a breath test, although they did admit to drinking.

Authorities did not name the driver.

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (AP) — An officer is injured and two suspects are in custody after one man stole a squad car in Wisconsin.

Appleton police Sgt. Dave Lund says the incident happened Saturday night as officers investigated two theft suspects at Pawn America in Grand Chute. One of the men got into an officer’s K9 squad car, with the dog inside, and backed into another officer’s squad car, injuring that officer.

The man then fled and responding officers fired shots at the vehicle, hitting him. He then left the squad car and took another vehicle from a woman, who was not hurt. The man was arrested and treated for injuries.

The K9 was not injured.

The other theft suspect sneaked away and called a taxi. He was arrested while he was in the cab.

Crash In Wis. Kills Nebraska, Former Michigan State Punters

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler have died in a car crash in Wisconsin after coaching at a kicking clinic, a sheriff’s department official said Sunday. Louisiana State’s kicker was injured in the crash.

Waukesha County Sheriff’s Lt. Thom Moerman said speed was likely a factor in the single-vehicle crash that happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

The 24-year-old Sadler, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was driving. He and 22-year-old Foltz, of Greeley, Nebraska, both died. LSU kicker, 21-year-old Colby Delahoussaye, was also a passenger and was injured in the crash.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln said Sunday the team will skip this week’s planned Big Ten media days in Chicago because of Foltz’s death. Officials with Michigan State didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Foltz was a three-year starter for the Nebraska team and last year he was named the Big Ten’s punter of the year. Foltz graduated from Nebraska with a degree in agronomy in May.

Nebraska Coach Mike Riley said Foltz was respected on the team, and had a positive influence on everyone he interacted with. Foltz’ friends gathered outside the stadium in Lincoln Sunday afternoon for a prayer vigil.

“The young men in our football program are hurting but I know that their strength of character and resolve will bring us together and we will honor Sam every day moving forward,” Riley said.

Sadler was a four-year starter and four-time academic All-American at Michigan State. He finished his college playing career after the 2014 season.

Dan Tracy with Kohl’s Kicking said both Sadler and Foltz had been coaching at a weekend clinic in Wisconsin.

Milone Roughed Up, Twins Lose To Red Sox 8-7

BOSTON (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have seen their share of rough innings this season, so manager Paul Molitor knew exactly what the fifth felt like.

“It’s a potential one-run deficit coming off the field and they turn it into a mountain to climb,” Molitor said of Boston’s five-run fifth that led to an 8-7 victory over the Twins on Sunday.

After Dustin Pedroia hit a leadoff homer to push the Red Sox ahead 4-3 in the inning, third baseman Miguel Sano had a ball go through his legs for an error and another run. Travis Shaw then belted a three-run homer, making it 8-3 and knocking starter Tommy Milone (3-3) out of the game.

“You’ve got a chance to come in here and potentially beat a team that’s been playing good — three out of four,” Molitor said. “Unearned runs, they’re painful, they’re tough when you can’t find a way to get off the field. We gave them too many outs.”

Juan Centeno had three hits and drove in three runs for the Twins, who completed a seven-game road trip 4-3. Bryon Buxton and Kennys Vargas each had two RBIs.

Milone allowed eight runs, including three homers, in 4 2/3 innings, snapping a personal three-game winning streak.

“A couple of pitches that they hit out I felt were decent, just a little bit too much of the plate,” he said. “They were still down, but they were able to lift them.”

Rick Porcello became the first Boston pitcher in 55 years to open a season 10-0 in Fenway Park, and Hanley Ramirez added a three-run homer as the Red Sox earned a split of the four-game series.

Xander Bogaerts had three singles for Boston, which won its 10th time in 13 games.

Porcello (13-2) allowed five runs with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, becoming the first since Don Schwall in 1961 to win his first 10 Fenway decisions in a season.

The Twins scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to slice it to 8-7, but Brad Ziegler got the final three outs for his first save with Boston after being acquired from Arizona earlier this month.

Ramirez’s homer – his fifth in five games – went into the first row of Monster seats, with a fan making a nice standing, two-handed grab, to make it 3-2.

The Twins tied it when Max Kepler tripled leading off the fourth before scoring on Vargas’ grounder.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: C Kurt Suzuki was out with stitches in his chin after getting hit in the face mask Saturday. “We’re trying to look at ways that we can potentially protect him if we needed to play him in an emergency,” Molitor said.

Red Sox: DH David Ortiz was rested. … Manager John Farrell said CF Mookie Betts’ right knee was “improved” and “we hope that by (Monday) night he’s back in the lineup.” Betts left Friday’s game with soreness in the knee.

BULLPEN HELP

The Red Sox recalled RHP Joe Kelly from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game after sending RHP Heath Hembree there following Saturday’s loss.

Kelly has only started since being acquired in 2014, but has pitched 52 2/3 career innings of relief with a 3.25 ERA.

KEY OUT

Junichi Tazawa entered with bases-loaded and no outs in the eighth. He allowed two inherited runners to score, but struck out Buxton on a splitter in the dirt to end the inning.

UP NEXT:

Twins: They’re off Monday before beginning a six-game homestand Tuesday. RHP Ervin Santana (3-8, 3.93) faces Atlanta RHP Lucas Harrell (1-2, 4.24) in the first of a two-game series.

Red Sox: LHP Drew Pomeranz makes his second start for Boston Monday after being acquired from San Diego. He gave up five runs in three innings in his debut Wednesday against the Giants. RHP Justin Verlander (9-6, 3.74) is slated to go for the Tigers in the opener of a three-game series.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A second person has died after a deadly house fire in southern Minnesota.

It happened Friday night around 8 p.m. in Rochester. When firefighters got there, they found 51-year-old Barbara Thoreson in the living room. She died at the scene.

Her 26-year-old son, Matthew, was also found in the home and was taken to the hospital. WCCO learned Sunday that he has also died from his injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Democratic Chair Resigns On Eve Of Convention

0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Debbie Wasserman Schultz is resigning under pressure as Democratic Party chairwoman, a stunning leadership shakeup as party officials gather in Philadelphia to nominate Hillary Clinton.

Wasserman Schultz’s announcement Sunday follows a firestorm over hacked emails suggesting the Democratic National Committee favored Clinton during the primary, despite pledging neutrality. The leaked emails prompted primary runner-up Bernie Sanders to call for Wasserman Schultz’s immediate resignation.

In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she will step down at the end of the four-day convention. She said she plans to formally open and close the convention, as well as address delegates.

Her statement does not address the email controversy.

Wasserman Schultz’s swift ouster underscores party leaders’ desire to avoid convention confrontations with Sanders’ loyal supporters. The chairwoman has been a lightning rod for criticism throughout the presidential campaign, with Sanders repeatedly accusing the DNC of backing Clinton.

Sanders said the 19,000 emails published by the website Wikileaks appeared to confirm his suspicions.

In one leaked email, a DNC official wondered whether Sanders’ religious beliefs could be used against him, questioning whether the candidate may be an atheist.

Sanders pressed for Wasserman Schultz to quit as chairwoman immediately. He also suggested that Clinton’s choice of running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, was a disappointment and that he would have preferred Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of liberals.

“His political views are not my political views. He is more conservative than I am. Would I have preferred to see somebody like an Elizabeth Warren selected by Secretary Clinton? Yes, I would have,” Sanders told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The Clinton team worked to portray their party’s convention in a different light from the just concluded Republican gathering in Cleveland, where Donald Trump accepted the GOP nomination but party divisions flared when his chief rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, refused to endorse the billionaire businessman.

Trump cast himself as the law-and-order candidate in a nation suffering under crime and hobbled by immigration, as the GOP convention stuck to a gloom-and-doom theme. Democrats said they wanted to convey a message of optimism and improving the lives of all Americans.

But party disunity also seems to be a factor in Philadelphia, given Sanders’ demands for a new leader and general unhappiness among his many supporters about how the nomination process unfolded.

Norman Solomon, a delegate who supports Bernie Sanders, says there is talk among Sanders’ delegates of walking out during Kaine’s acceptance speech or turning their backs as a show of protest.

Solomon said he believes a “vast majority” of Sanders delegates support these kinds of protests to express their dismay. Sanders’ supporters say they are concerned that Kaine is not progressive enough.

Dan O’Neal, 68, is a retired school teacher and delegate from Arizona, said Wasserman Schultz has to be censured.

“We knew they were stacking the deck against Bernie from the get-go, but this type of stuff coming out is outrageous,” he said. “It proves our point that they’ve tried to marginalize him and make it as difficult as possible.”

Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, agreed, saying Sanders’ supporters “have a lot to complain about.”

“The emails have proven the system was rigged from the start,” Manafort told “Fox News Sunday.”

Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, tried to shift blame away from DNC officials to “Russian state actors” who, he said, may have hacked into DNC computers “for the purpose of helping Donald Trump,” the Republican presidential nominee.

How the emails were stolen hasn’t been confirmed.

“It was concerning last week that Donald Trump changed the Republican platform to become what some experts would regard as pro-Russian,” Mook said.

Clinton is within just days of her long-held ambition to become the party’s official presidential nominee.

After the DNC released a slightly trimmed list of superdelegates — those are the party officials who can back any candidate — it now takes 2,382 delegates to formally clinch the nomination. Clinton has 2,814 when including superdelegates, according to an Associated Press count. Sanders has 1,893.

Sanders has endorsed Clinton, but his delegates are pushing for a state-by-state tally. The state-by-state roll call is scheduled for Tuesday.

Also Sunday, Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, were back at their longtime church in Richmond, Virginia, a day after he made his campaign debut with Clinton.

Kaine, a former choir member at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, sang a solo during Communion. He later told reporters outside the church: “We needed some prayers today and we got some prayers, and we got some support and it really feels good.”

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Authorities say a state trooper and a driver were both hospitalized Sunday after the driver hit the parked trooper at a cross over in the east Twin Cities metro.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened Sunday afternoon on Interstate 35E near Wagon Wheel Trail in Mendota Heights. Authorities say a state trooper was parked in a crossover area when a driver heading northbound hit the trooper on the passenger side door.

The State Patrol says the trooper and driver were taken to a hospital by ambulance. Neither the driver or the state trooper suffered serious injuries.

What led up to the crash is under investigation.

Pizza Driver Fighting For His Life After Saturday Morning Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Minneapolis pizza driver is in the ICU at HCMC. He’s was upgraded Sunday from critical to serious condition.

Andrew Gryskiewicz just finished his final delivery early Saturday morning when someone approached his car and shot him in the shoulder, the bullet hitting his heart. Andrew is a delivery driver at Dulano’s Pizza in Uptown.

He was supposed to work the Sunday shift, but Andrew Gryskiewicz won’t be doing that for a while.

His boss, Jared Gruett, owns Dulano’s.

“He wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, he was just doing his job and was shot,” Gruett said.

Andrew’s boss said the loyal and hardworking driver had just made his last run to some regular customers.

Moments later, a few blocks away, a passer-by saw him slumped in his car. Duffy Boeser is Andrew’s father.

“We are so grateful to whoever that was because they saved his life, literally,” Duffy Boeser said.

Feet away from Andrew’s hospital bed, his father explains his injuries to WCCO.

“He got hit here on the left side almost straight down in his shoulder, it passed through his lung, it passed through his right ventricle of his heart. The bullet is still here, it’s in his liver,” Duffy said.

He says surgeons say they had one minute to act,

“Right in the middle of the floor there, they had to open up his chest and reach in and plug the hole in his heart. I was told he was as close to dead as you could possibly be without being dead when they got him here,” Duffy said.

Boeser complimented Minneapolis officers and paramedics as well as hospital staff.

“This team at HCMC, absolutely awesome, they saved his life, he defied the odds immediately,” Duffy said.

He says his son is slowly remembering the scene and a gun. Officers are also trying to figure out if he was robbed.

“Any one of us could end up where Andrew is right now with someone like that on the street.  So we need get that person off the street now, today,” Duffy said.

Officers are hoping for a tip that leads to an arrest. Police say they want to hear from anyone who was near 31st and 3rd in Minneapolis early Saturday.

“He’s part of a huge family that loves him very much and we are devastated, dumbfounded by this senseless violence,” Duffy said.

Boeser is in ICU and will be there for a while. He didn’t have any personal health insurance.  His friends set up a GoFundMe page, and here is how to donate.

Finding Minnesota: Silver Lake’s Toilet Bowl Races

SILVER LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) — Summer is a time when Minnesotans celebrate their towns’ fairs and festivals.

The Silver Lake community will host its annual Pola-Czesky days the first weekend in August.

The event features a 5K walk/run, fireworks and the oh-so-popular toilet bowl races.

On the first Friday in August, Silver Lake’s Main Street transforms from a quiet thoroughfare to the highlight of Pola-Czesky days.

“They put a toilet bowl on a frame, with wheels, and race it down a street,” said Sharon Bandas, a resident of Silver Lake.

Harvey Mikolichek founded the races.

He said the idea came to him in effort to expand the town’s annual festival back in the 1960s.

“We got together and the idea just came out,” he said. “My grandmother was sitting by us and said, ‘That’s disgusting,’ and we thought, ‘We’ve got something here,'” Mikolichek said.

During the first year, the toilet bowl races were nothing more than an old latrine strapped on a red wagon and pushed down a hill.

“It wasn’t the smartest thing to do, and we found out how sharp the porcelain is when they break,” Mikolichek said.

Over the years, the competition evolved for safety reasons. In the ‘70s and early ‘80s, competitors built their own toilet bowl cruiser and raced down a flat road under the power of a plunger.

However, through the ‘80s and ‘90s, the toilet bowl races were canceled and eventually replaced by a lip syncing contest.

Seven years ago, the race made its return with the help of Silver Lake resident Ben Stifter.

“We started talking one night and wanted to start the races up again,” Stifter said.

While Stifter wasn’t alive to see the first generation of toilet bowl races, he heard the old stories of tough competition from his family. One of those family members even passed down one of the old toilet bowl racers for the first year of the new competition.

“It was pretty crazy,” Stifter said. “We had a big crowd, a really big crowd.”

In the last few years, the race underwent another evolution with latrine themed obstacles added along the two-block course.

“That adds a lot of fun, because it takes away from the straight race,” Stifter said.

Teams of two sit on toilets attached to wheels and push their way through the course with plungers.

In their first obstacle, teams must unravel an entire roll of toilet paper before moving on.

In the second obstacle, teams race to fill a toilet tank with water.

The third obstacle involves spinning around a plunger before racing back to the starting line.

“It’s more challenging than it looks, that’s for sure,” said Kerry Venier, Silver Lake’s city clerk.

While participants put in all their effort for a first place finish, everyone sees the humor involved in using old toilet bowls.

“I didn’t have a paper to read, had I had that, I probably would have flew,” Venier said during a practice run.

“It makes it fun for an audience and gets them involved, it’s fun,” said Tom Hoffman, who lives in Silver Lake.

This year, the contest will add another element with a contest based on the most elaborate latrine.

“I know we’re going to see a taco. I know we’re supposed to see a hunting scene,” Mikolichek said.

Only in Silver Lake can a toilet be part of a team sport.

“It’s just a hilarious thing,” Bandas said. “Everyone lets their hair down and has fun.”

The toilet bowl races take place on Aug. 5 in downtown Silver Lake.

They coincide with a weekend full of events for the annual Pola-Czesky days.

Sacred Heart To Rebuild After Church Destroyed By Storms

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A western Minnesota community is working to rebuild after a fire destroyed a historic church.

A lightning strike hit Hawk Creek Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart and sparked a fire at about 9 a.m. Saturday. No one was hurt, but the church is a total loss.

Jim and Sue Gustafson’s family has been going to the church every Sunday for the last 17 years.

“It was really strange, like a bad dream yesterday,” Jim Gustafson said.

The couple described watching the church burn as they worked to rebuild on Sunday.

“A lot of families have been coming here for five generation,” Jim Gustafson said.

Built in the 1880s, the rich history of Hawk Creek Lutheran church can never be fully restored. But members of the 100-person congregation rushed to help in any way they could on Saturday.

“I was standing way back at the tree line and you could feel the heat and you realized it is more than just the steeple that’s going to go,” Sue Gustafson said. “It was heartbreaking to watch.”

Church members were able to salvage some pieces of the past, like a decades-old bible and records of members’ names. Fire crews from around the region stopped the flames just short of the church’s altar.

Within hours, a fundraising page was set up to help rebuild.

“We will come back from the ashes a lot stronger,” Sue Gustafson said.

There was no official service on Sunday, yet church members still gathered there and held on to faith.

“This is just the building and the walls,” Jim Gustafson said. “The people make up the church.”

Church members will attend a neighboring town’s church services for the time being.

Medina Family Mourning Woman Killed In Atlanta Gang Gunfire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A family in Medina is in mourning after a tragic death.

WCCO spoke with the parents and siblings of Taylor Hayden, a 25-year-old woman who grew up in the Twin Cities and graduated from Wayzata High School. She’s the younger sister of State Senator Jeff Hayden.

The family says Taylor was caught in the crossfire of rival gangs after flying to Atlanta with a group of her college friends for a weekend getaway. Witnesses told police she was in the parking lot of a nightclub early Saturday morning, when two groups of men began shooting at each other.

Taylor was hit and killed.

“The interesting thing about this is that it was her first girlfriends’ weekend. She had wanted to go on a girlfriends’ weekend forever,” Joyce Hayden, Taylor’s mother, said.

Taylor’s mother says she admired her daughter’s spirit and determination.

She had recently moved to Houston where she had a new job, a new apartment and a new car.

“They had rented a house, they had this fun weekend planned. It’s tragic that it ended like that. Really tragic,” Joyce said.

“She was starting to grow. That was the whole thing. Her leadership was just unbelievable and she started to grow,” Peter Hayden, Taylor’s father, said.

Taylor’s father, Dr. Peter Hayden, is the CEO and Founder of Turning Point. It’s a Minneapolis agency that works with African Americans who are battling chemical dependency.

“Many of the young men I work with are similar to the gang bangers who are shooting around this country. I’m trying to help them see there is a bigger opportunity in life,” Peter said.

Erin Hayden, still in college, has lost her big sister.

“Anger is one emotion I have not yet felt, only sadness. She’s just not here. The only thing I want is for her to be back here,” Erin said.

State Senator Jeff Hayden has lost his little sister.

“It does get hard. It tests your faith. It really tests your faith in humanity,” he said. “We don’t know the next great thing she was going to do and we won’t know now, because someone decided they couldn’t settle a matter any other way than shooting across the street.”

Taylor’s parents are heartbroken. The young woman they were so proud of for following her dreams and accomplishing her goals is gone.

Sanders To Meet With Delegates Prior To DNC Start

0
0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Amid lingering angst over the primary process, Bernie Sanders has a chance to encourage his supporters to embrace party unity.

Sanders is set to meet privately with supporters Monday before the start of the Democratic National Convention. Sanders backers have expressed frustration over the nominating procedures, the party platform and party leadership, with some suggesting they may protest or take action on the floor. But the Vermont Senator has struck a positive message in recent interviews, expressing his support for Hillary Clinton.

“I’m proud that, in the Democratic platform that was passed a few weeks ago, we are making some real progress,” Sanders said on CNN Sunday. He added: “My focus right now is defeating (Donald) Trump, electing Clinton, electing progressive candidates around this country and focusing on the issues that matter the most to working families.”

Sanders will address the full convention Monday night.

Efforts to promote party togetherness were not helped by the publication last week of thousands of hacked emails, some of which suggested the DNC was favoring Clinton during the primary season. For many Sanders fans, the messages proved that their concerns about party officials preferring Clinton were correct. While party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down soon, she will still have a convention role, which could draw jeers from Sanders delegates.

At a meeting of the DNC credentials committee Sunday, comments praising Wasserman Schultz were met with laughter by some Sanders supporters. At a committee meeting the previous day, Sanders backers shouted “shame, shame, shame” as amendments to abolish or limit superdelegates in future nominating competitions were voted down.

Some Sanders delegates feel the Clinton campaign is not taking their policy concerns seriously. At a news conference Sunday, Sanders delegate Norman Solomon, 65, of Point Reyes Station, California, said many of Sanders’ liberal supporters were disappointed in Clinton’s vice presidential pick of Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine. He said most viewed Kaine as not progressive enough and that there had been discussion about a variety of protest actions at the convention, including walking out.

“We’ve got to challenge the corporate power in the Democratic Party represented by Hillary Clinton today,” Solomon said.

Still, Sanders delegate Courtney Rowe, 34, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said “we are not here to disrupt for the purpose of disruption.” She said she was not currently planning on any action and wanted to hear from Sanders.

Sanders, who endorsed Clinton two weeks ago after a long-fought primary, has sought to find common ground around the party platform and rules. He successfully won major platform concessions, including a $15 federal minimum wage, abolishing the death penalty and breaking up large Wall Street banks. And at the DNC rules committee the two sides agreed on a “unity commission” that will review changes to the nominating process, including limiting the role of superdelegates.

After the unity commission agreement, Sanders supporters seeking to pass amendments to abolish or curtail superdelegates opted against pursuing convention floor fights on the issue.

Sanders has made clear that he would like to see a full roll call vote at the convention, so that his delegates can show their support.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A portion of Summit Avenue in St. Paul closed again Monday morning as people came together over the weekend to remember Philando Castile.

A group called “Justice Occupation for Philando” hosted an event Sunday outside of the Governor’s Mansion. They called it “Stand for Something Sunday.”

It started at 4 p.m. and included music, dancing, spoken word and poetry. Later in the evening, the group held a candlelight vigil to honor Castile.

He was shot and killed by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop earlier this month.

Overnight, the group watched a movie right on Summit Avenue.

Police were not arresting them.
