Administrator Responds To Claims On Prince Estate

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The special administrator overseeing the estate of the late rock superstar Prince says 16 people who have filed claims to heirship don’t have sufficient evidence to proceed with genetic testing.

Another person was told there isn’t enough information to pursue their claim.

Bremer Trust said genetic tests need to find a link between Prince’s father and supposed half-brother.

However, two people have been told they will need to undergo genetic testing to establish a possible relationship. If they are related, Brianna Nelson and an 11-year-old girl could be the music legend’s niece and grandniece.

Mike’s Mix: Fine Spirits Classic

0
0

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Each week, Mike Augustyniak finds a new cocktail from a local mixologist. This week, Mike checks out a couple of cocktails from the Fine Spirits Classic.

The Professor

  • 2 oz Prairie Gin
  • ¾ oz ginger syrup*
  • ¾ oz lime juice
  • 3 drops of Angostura Bitters

Instructions:

*To make ginger syrup: combine 1 part ginger juice with 2 parts sugar over heat until dissolved.

Combine gin, ginger syrup, lime juice and ice into a cocktail shaker, cover and shake until chilled. Pour into glass and garnish with 3 drops of Angostura Bitters.

Taste Test

A mainstay on the menu since the beginning of Bradstreet Craftshouse, this ginger-y take on the classic Gimlet was developed by bartender Toby Maloney.  It brings on the spice, without any of the heat, using fresh ginger juice in a rich simple syrup.  Tangy, citrusy and balanced, this cocktail is great for summer, and pairs perfectly with Asian-inspired dishes.

Bradstreet Neighborhood Craftshouse serves cocktails with an Eastern influence, and food that can best be described as American classics with a Japanese interpretation.

The Bee’s Knees

  • 2 oz Tattersall Gin
  • 1 ½ oz lemon juice
  • ¾ oz honey syrup *

Instructions:

*To make honey syrup, combine equal parts honey and water over heat until dissolved.

Combine gin, lemon juice, honey syrup and ice into a cocktail shaker, cover and shake until chilled. Place in rocks glass and garnish with a lemon wheel.

Taste Test

The Bee’s Knees cocktail was developed with a very specific purpose — mask the horrendous flavor of Prohibition-era bathtub gin.  Apparently this recipe was one of the best, and owes its name to a popular phrase of the era.  The 22 botanicals contained in Tattersall gin gives this version of the cocktail extra complexity and notes befitting of summer.

Citizen Supper Club specializes in the food and drink of the 1960s, and is located in the InterContinental hotel in St. Paul.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — More than 150,000 people have tickets to see inside U.S. Bank Stadium this weekend.

After years of debate and construction surrounding the $1 billion stadium, many Minnesotans were curious to get a first-hand look at the state-of-the-art building.

The open house continues Sunday with some tickets available at the gate.

Outdoor activities in the plaza outside the stadium are meant for the whole family and will not require a ticket, according to stadium officials.

While games and concerts do not kick off until late August, Vikings fans like T.J. Day had rave reviews from simply walking through the concourses and seats of the stadium.

“It is beautiful,” Day said. “I’m just happy the Vikings have their home again.”

The stadium seats some 64,000 people. State money funded nearly half the stadium.

Mike Treppa of Blaine says he wanted to see what his tax dollars helped pay for.

“The building is architecturally beautiful and impressive,” Treppa said. “I don’t agree with spending that kind of money for private industry when the NFL spends billions per year.”

Day says he thinks it is worth it.

“This place is huge. I heard you can fit two Metrodomes in here,” Day said.

Organizers for the stadium say Minnesotans will get back more than they put in for the state’s economy in the long run through development around the stadium and major scores, like the 2018 Super Bowl.

‘Enough Minneapolis’ Features Families Affected By Gun Violence

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Minneapolis artist is teaming up with families that have lost loved ones to gun violence.

They are part of a movement called “Enough Minneapolis” that started this month.

The social media campaign started featuring photos of family members of those who have been murdered through gun violence in Minneapolis.

The artist behind the pictures, Nikki McComb, told WCCO she hopes this will give families of victims some comfort and convince others using guns illegally to lay down their weapons.

“I’ve thought over and over and over, ‘What can I do? How do I do something?’ and art just comes right back to me ,” McComb said.

Living without their loved ones, each one of the people participating in one of the photo shoots on Friday said they know the ones who pass away are not the only victims of gun violence.

Two months ago, Nene Griffin watched her 58-year-old grandmother die beside her in their family minivan.

Birdell Beeks was shot by a stray bullet during a dispute she had nothing to do with

“I was calling my mom and everybody else was calling the police,” Griffin described of the moments after her grandmother was shot. “I just wanted my grandma to be OK and she wasn’t talking to me.”

“I’m like, ‘Nanny, say something to me please,’ and she closed her eyes and I knew that I couldn’t help her,” Griffin said. “I beat myself up every day because I wanted to help her.”

Still trying to help her grandmother, alongside her brother Rob Griffin and other family members of the murdered, Griffin said she has had enough.

“It means enough of all of this,” McComb said of the group name. “Stop shooting each other.”

Luther Jones was also at Friday’s photo shoot.

His 2-year-old nephew Le’vonte King Jason Jones was killed by gunfire two weeks ago.

“That’s a little baby that I really loved, and to see him at his funeral not really moving or saying anything was just really hard,” Luther Jones said.

Takisha Randle’s son was 25 years old when he was shot to death this year.

Jimmy Stanback was a father himself, but his mother said he will always be one of her babies.

“We are all tired of losing someone,” Randle said. “The pain is very tremendous and it never goes away.”

The families are holding on to memories and hoping to reach others in a way words often cannot.

“Pictures and videos speak louder than words,” Griffin said. “I want to make a statement that this is enough. People don’t realize how many people actually get hurt by gun violence every day.”

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with 2-year-old Le’vonte Jones’ murder.

The cases of Beeks and Stanback have not yet led to arrests.

Minneapolis police along with these families are hoping for more leads and for anyone with information about these crimes to come forward.

Tips can be submitted anonymously to the police.

If you wish to help the project, a GoFundMe has been set up.

Minn. Family Uses Bean Bag Toss To Raise Awareness Of Domestic Violence

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) — A Twin Cities family is sharing their story with the hope of raising awareness of domestic violence.

Last July, Natalie Beissel was shot and killed by her boyfriend who then turned the gun on himself. The 32-year-old was at the top of her class in medical school and had dreams of specializing in internal medicine.

Her family is now committed to education and prevention of domestic violence.

Natalie’s brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Shelly Beissel, have spent months planning a bags/corn hole tournament in her honor.

They tossed the bean bags towards the wooden platforms at their Maple Grove home on Saturday.

(credit: CBS)

That simple lawn game is not what most expect grief to look like but, for the Beissels, it’s become a way to mourn and remember Natalie’s life.

“For us, this is a healing process,” said Shelly Beissel.

“There was nothing more that she would’ve wanted to dothan hang out with some friends and play some yard games and throw some bags. This is something my sister would love,” said Nick Beissel.

On July 31, Nick’s mom called him with unthinkable news after she was unable to reach Natalie for more than a day. Nick says his sister usually talked to his mom on a daily basis as she attended medical school in Tuscon, Arizona. His parents eventually got so worried, they called police.

“She just said they found them both dead and I couldn’t breathe. I could not breathe,” Nick said.

Natalie was at the top of her class entering in her final year of medical school at A.T. Still University.

The Beissels have dozens of pictures capturing Natalie’s light-hearted spirit, dreams of helping others and her strong connection to family.

“She was a very happy person,” said Nick. “I don’t know that I ever saw her down. She was positive, she could turn anything negative to something positive.”

“She loved life and cared for everyone,” Shelly said.

Yet, behind closed doors was an abusive boyfriend.

According to her family, when Natalie tried to leave, Marco Florio shot and killed her and took his own life.

“There was no idea that she was being controlled the way she was,” Nick said.

“We know all these red flags, now, in looking at what happened, but we didn’t before,” Shelly said.

In coping with their loss, Nick and Shelly found purpose with a commitment to raising awareness of domestic violence.

The Bags & Beers For Nat, Love Conquers Violence benefit will incorporate a backyard game as a way to have the conversation and educate.

“It’s happening all the time and we’re not talking about it,” Shelly said.

Natalie devoted her life to helping and healing, her family hopes her legacy will do the same.

“If we can save one person and family from going through what we’ve gone through over this last year that means we’ve succeeded,” Nick said.

That benefit for Natalie will be held Saturday, August 6 at Herkimer’s from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m..

All proceeds will go to Natalie Beissel Scholarship Fund at ATSU and the Domestic Abuse Project.

“After a while you could see some flames and then it spread to the steeple climbed all the way up the bell tower,” Hegna said.

Fire officials say the small town church, built in the 1880s, was struck by lightning as storms rolled across the state.

“It was really hard. My family, going back many generations, we’ve all gone to the same church and just recently went under a bunch of remodels,” she said.

It was one of several areas of damage all over the state from Saturday’s thunderstorms. Isolated flooding in Litchfield allowed residents to kayak in their backyards. The town was hit by a tornado last week.

Woody Spitzmueller says the storms damaged boats, lifts, and lifted water trampolines on Prior Lake.

“I saw … what appeared to be a waterspout, probably I would guess the clouds were maybe 500 feet up,” Spitzmueller said.

He had never seen a water spout in the nearly 20 years he has lived on the lake.

“The wave went up in the air and pieces went everywhere, and there was debris everywhere at that point,” he said.

Luckily no one was hurt. While most of the damage in Grainwood Bay was cleaned up by the evening, the damage is more long lasting for other towns affected.

Hawk Creek Lutheran parishioners will be temporarily attending services at a nearby church.

“Just go to the same services with them until they can rebuild,” Hegna said.

That church in Sacred Heart is a total loss. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help rebuild.

BOSTON (AP) — Miguel Sano homered and Eduardo Nunez drove in three runs, including two in a five-run seventh inning, as the Minnesota Twins rallied for an 11-9 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.

Eddie Rosario had four singles for Minnesota, which won its second straight over Boston after losing the series opener Thursday.

Hanley Ramirez belted a three-run homer and Xander Bogaerts had four hits for the Red Sox, who lost for just the third time in 12 games. Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits and two RBIs.

Red Sox starter David Price went 5 2/3 innings and gave up 11 hits for his second straight start. The left-hander gave up five runs, raising his ERA to 4.51.

Ryan Pressly (4-5) got four outs in relief for the win. Brandon Kintzler worked the ninth for his eighth save.

Twins starter Ricky Nolasco lasted just two innings, giving up six runs and walking three.

Trailing 8-5 in the seventh, the Twins surged ahead with five runs. Max Kepler had an RBI triple and scored on Kennys Vargas’ double. Vargas scored the tying run on an overturned replay on Rosario’s single against Tommy Layne (0-1).

Plate umpire Clint Fagan originally ruled him out on a throw from Bradley, but Vargas slipped his hand in on a head-first slide. Nunez’s two-run single made it 10-8.

Sano homered in the eighth.

Ramirez homered as Boston erased a 4-1 deficit with a five-run second, hitting it over the Green Monster after Brock Holt scored on a wild pitch and Dustin Pedroia had an RBI double.

Bradley’s run-scoring double made it 7-4.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: C Kurt Suzuki was back in the lineup after getting Friday off, but had to leave to get stitches on his chin after taking a foul off the mask. . 1B Joe Mauer was rested.

Red Sox: CF Mookie Betts didn’t play, resting his right knee after leaving Friday’s game. He said he had tests that showed no structural damage and they were “trying to get the swelling down” and “some fluid out.” . Manager John Farrell said closer Craig Kimbrel could have his first bullpen session “(Sunday) or Monday” and could be “very close” to a simulated game. Kimbrel had surgery for a meniscus tear in his left knee on July 11.

WINDY CONDITIONS

Early strong gusts made for a strange night.

Red Sox TV analyst Jerry Remy was hit in the head by a falling monitor in the booth and was sent home to rest. He’s expected back Sunday.

In the first, Minnesota’s Robbie Grossman hit a fly into a gust, sending RF Michael Martinez twisting as the ball fell for a triple.

There were a handful of stoppages as dirt from the tracks and litter swirled. Batters stepped out to wipe their eyes and Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez headed to the dugout to have a trainer help him clear his left eye.

SEEING DOUBLES

David Ortiz collected his 35th double of the season, tying the record for most by a player 40 or older. The 40-year-old Ortiz tied Sam Rice, who was also 40 and did it in 1930.

UP NEXT

Twins: LHP Tommy Milone (3-2, 4.71 ERA) is set to start the series finale on Sunday.

Red Sox: RHP Rick Porcello (12-2, 3.47) looks to remain unbeaten in his starts at Fenway Park this season. Porcello would become the first in 55 years to open a season 10-0 in Fenway starts since Don Schwall won his first 10 decisions in 1961 before losing in mid-September.
