MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Gopher men’s hockey team suffered its first home WCHA loss of the season Friday night as Michigan Tech scored 33 seconds into overtime to beat the Gophers 3-2 at Mariucci Arena.

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period after a shot from Mark Alt deflected off a Michigan Tech skate and into the net.

Michigan Tech scored six minutes later to tie it 1-1, then scored a power play goal a little more than a minute into the third period to take a 2-1 lead. The Gophers answered about five minutes later as Seth Helgeson scored on assists from Alt and Nate Condon.

The loss drops the Gophers to 13-5-1 overall and 10-3 in WCHA play. The Gophers are tied with UMD at the top of the league after the Bulldogs played Wisconsin to a tie Friday night.

Minnesota and Michigan Tech play again at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mariucci Arena.
