Dayton To Counties: No Relief In Surplus

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton is telling leaders of Minnesota’s counties that he’s sympathetic to their financial difficulties, but he’s not promising any relief.

Dayton spoke Monday in Minneapolis at the annual convention of the Association of Minnesota Counties.

Dayton signed off this year on policies that cut aid to local governments and the elimination of a popular tax credit for property owners. He says he didn’t want those changes, but says he had to compromise with legislative leaders.

Dayton says that despite last week’s news of an $876 million budget surplus, he’ll wait until 2013 to press for the tax changes he wants.
