ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – Hundreds of people gathered on the lawn of the State Capitol Thursday morning to rally against the constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.
The state legislature has placed on the ballot this November a proposed constitutional amendment that says: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”
With six months before voters have their say, both opponents and supporters have been amping up their campaign efforts.
Outfront Minnesota is calling this their “Rally for Equality”. People from across Minnesota came to make a statement.
They say this amendment would hurt people in the gay and lesbian community.
A spokesperson for Outfront Minnesota says members are trying to get their message out by talking to people in the community.
Their message is simple: vote “no.”
“Clergy are coming out of the woodwork wanting to talk about this because what’s been put on this is an amendment to shut down the possibility of committing to love,” said Pastor Grant Stevenson of Minnesotans United for All Families, “to shut down the possibility of some people being able to be married and to do that by using the constitution as a weapon against people of Minnesota.”
Gay marriage is currently legal in six states, including Iowa, in addition to Washington, D.C. Right now, 29 states have constitutional bans on gay marriage.
