Gang Behind 50-State Ballot Push Awaits Candidates

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A group trying to clear the path for a bipartisan presidential ticket stands to gain from public fury over partisan gridlock, ballot assurances in many states and buy-in from prominent people across the political spectrum.

What Americans Elect lacks at this point is a candidate. The group, which is careful to distinguish itself from a third party, is moving closer to an online primary that should net it a nominee by late June.

But it remains to be seen whether it can attract candidates with stature or money.

The political experiment comes as more Americans than ever classify themselves as political independents.

By fall, the group expects a nominee to have access to ballots in all 50 states.
