MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A new exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts examines the role photography has played in the rise of a global sports culture.

“The Sports Show” exhibit opens Sunday and runs through mid-May. It includes photos by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol and others, as well as a sound-and-video installation on the 1966 World Cup soccer final between West Germany and England.

Exhibit curator David Little says sports photography helped transform what were once local events into experiences shared by millions around the world.

In April, the museum will open a companion exhibit of photographs documenting Minnesota’swinter hockey culture.
