FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A proposed Red River diversion channel around Fargo has cleared another hurdle, with the official support of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leadership.

The corps says its chief of engineers has endorsed the feasibility report and environmental impact study. That clears the way for the project to go before Congress next year.

The proposed 36-mile diversion channel is aimed at providing long-term flood control for the area around Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., which have gone through three consecutive spring flood battles. It is expected to cost more than $1.7 billion.

A ceremony marking the signing of the report is set for Thursday afternoon in Fargo City Hall.
